Peace to Those with Whom He's Pleased - December 6

This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 2.12-14

There is a somber note in the angels' praise. This peace is for "those on whom his favor rests." We know that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11.6). While Christmas is the offer of peace to all, not everyone receives it.

"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil" (John 3.19). Or as the aged Simeon said when he saw the infant Jesus, "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel... so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed" (Luke 2.34-35). Many look upon Christmas and see a holiday and no more.

"He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1.11-12). It was to his own disciples that Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14.27).

The key that unlocks the treasure chest of God's peace is faith in the promises of God. The people who enjoy the peace of God that surpasses all understanding are those who in everything, by prayer and supplication, offer their requests to God. So Paul prays, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him" (Romans 15.13). And when we trust the promises of God and have joy and peace and love, then God is glorified.

Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rest.
