Question 7 :: What does God's law require?

Answer:

That we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength; and love our neighbor as ourselves in perfect perpetual obedience.

Children:

That we love God with all our heart; and love our neighbor as ourselves.

Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Commentary:

What God commands should always be done and what God forbids should never be done. God’s law is unwavering and requires perfect obedience.

The greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.  All are commanded to delight in the Lord your God; seeking and finding all happiness in Him.

The second commandment, is to love your neighbor as yourself.  This is a one way, sacrificial love for fellow humanity modeled after the person and work of Jesus.

God reveals his character and nature through his law: what he commands and what he forbids. The moral law is not arbitrary.  It is based on God's own holiness.
