Question 36 :: What is the gospel?

Answer:

The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and raised to new life for the justification of believers.

Children:

Jesus died, was buried, and raised to life to save me.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

Commentary:

The word gospel means ‘good news.’  It is the good news that in Jesus God has reconciled himself with everyone who places their faith in Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection in their place for their sins. The Gospel consists of four things: (1) mankind is separated from a holy God by our sin.  (2) Our sin cannot be overcome by our own efforts or good works.  (3) Jesus paid the price for our sin debt with his perfectly obedient life and sacrificial death in our place for our sins.  (4) Only those who place their trust in Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection for their sins will be saved and are reconciled to their Creator. The gospel is the good news believers are to take to the ends of earth and offer to all people.
