Question 16 :: Why did Jesus have be God?

Answer:

As God, Jesus effectively paid an eternal, infinite debt due for man’s sin.

Children:

To pay the eternal debt man owed.

Acts 2:24

But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold of him.

Commentary:

Because of Jesus’ divine nature, his obedience and suffering is perfect and effective.  Because of his divine nature, Jesus was able to bear the righteous anger of God against sin and overcome death.

Without being fully God, Jesus would have been born with the same corrupt sin nature as all of humanity.  Likewise, because Jesus was God, his sacrifice is an eternal sacrifice and effective at removing man’s infinite penalty for sin.

Jesus claimed to be God.  He proved his divine nature by supernatural power and healing.  Jesus also forgave sins committed against God.
