For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

Commentary:
In order to pay the penalty for humanity, God became a man. Jesus was born into the world through a virgin mother with God himself as his Father. Jesus showed his humanity by entering the world as a baby, and growing both physically and in wisdom.
As a man, Jesus perfectly kept the law of God. Jesus is the second Adam. Where Adam failed to keep God’s one command, Jesus fulfilled all of God’s law. Where sin entered the world through one man’s (Adam’s) disobedience, the gift of righteousness came by one man’s (Jesus’) obedience.
As a human being, Jesus is a sinless substitute for humanity. Through faith in Jesus sacrifice of atonement, his perfect righteousness is credited to the believer.
