Colossians 1:21-22

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

Commentary:

All people have sinned against God, breaking his Law.  God is infinitely holy and righteous.  The punishment for breaking the Law is death - separation from God.  Because God is eternal, the punishment for breaking his Law is eternal separation from God.

Therefore, we sinners need a way to escape the righteous judgment of God.  Since we are stained by sin and cannot keep the Law of God, then the only one who could do what we cannot is God Himself.  That is why Jesus is God in flesh.  He is both divine and human.  He was made under the Law (Galatians 4:4), and He fulfilled it perfectly.
